From the West End to Broadway, Liz Robertson is revered as theatre royalty, a permanent fixture in the glittering world of musical leading ladies. Audiences have been enthralled by her exquisite voice, her subtlety, and taste.
Over the years she’s worked with every major musical theatre composer from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim, to Rodgers and Hammerstein and, of course, her late husband Alan Jay Lerner.
But she’s now decided to mix things up musically and show people a different side with Songs From My Trunk.
In it, Liz unveils an eclectic collection of songs from Van Morrison’s “Someone Like You” to the Beatles’ “Here There and Everywhere”… to “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys and Ann Hampton Callaway’s “Bring Back Romance”… plus songs from the great American Songbook.
As a very young actress/singer, Liz came to public attention starring as Eliza Doolittle in the 1979 London revival of My Fair Lady, a role for which she won the Variety Club’s Most Promising Actress award and, not incidentally, won its lyricist, Alan J. Lerner. She has led the cast in a string of impressive and popular musicals, including the original productions of Song and Dance and Side By Side By Sondheim, Stepping Out, The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, and Love Never Dies in the West End.
“From a young age, I wanted to sound like the popstars of my era… or to be sexy, down and dirty like Ella, Nina and Cleo, but there was nothing warm and smoky in my sound. Now is the time to start exploring those new notes with songs that I have always desired to sing but never could without sounding ridiculous. So here we are, experimenting….at my age!” -Liz Robertson
