Join us for Melissa Errico‘s brand new cabaret show, devoted to one of her great loves, the “film noir” of the nineteen forties and fifties. With some songs taken directly from the movies and many others taken from the larger world of mysterious, night-in-the-city emotion the films evoke, the show will include the saloon songs of Arlen & Mercer (“One For My Baby”), the Broadway songs of Kurt Weil (“My Ship”, “Ballad of Jenny”), and the bar-closing songs of Matt Dennis (“The Night We Called It A Day”).
Melissa will also daringly move forward to some darker contemporary ballads (Patricia Barber’s “Silent Partner”) and to the smokier side of Joni Mitchell (“The Crazy Cries Of Love”) — not to mention theater songs by David Yazbek from The Band’s Visit and by Cy Coleman from City of Angels, and film songs from the French tradition. We’ll hear “Blues in the Night,” “Laura,” “Angel Eyes,” “I’m A Fool to Want You”— all those brooding and swinging songs of tragic dames with dark pasts, and lonely detectives with no futures, songs that evoke that sultry, half-lit world of mystery and regret that everyone loves.
The show will also include several new numbers with lyrics by Melissa’s frequent collaborator, the writer Adam Gopnik. David Shire is offering Melissa “Farewell, My Lovely,” using David’s famous movie theme of that name, and Peter Foley will offer more new music with a French theme.
“Need I say that my love’s well spent/Well spent with angel eyes tonight.”
